Project Proposal:
I plan to do my project on an anti technology ad. I personally want to use this topic because i feel strongly that teens and young adults are too attached to their phones. People should be concerned about this issue because teens social skills will become worse over time when they are only use to talking to people over the phone, and also they become detached from the real things around them. I can motivate people to care about this cause by over exaggerating the way technology effects us today. Organizations that are involved with this cause include Neo-Luddism or New Luddism. Facts about this topic are that the average person checks their phone 110 times a day, and teens spend over 7 and 1/2 hours a day consuming media. Tuesday, December 23, 2014

Photojournalism- Aid With Lemonade
Aid With Lemonade
By Maddie Lucas - 1 December, 2014
On
December 1st, a dark and rainy afternoon, a few kids got together
and had a lemonade stand charity event for the Humane Society. The Humane
Society is the nation’s largest animal protection organization that raises
money to prevent animal cruelty such as animal fighting, horse cruelty,
wildlife trade, seal slaughter, and captive hunts. The society receives a lot
of money by having large fundraiser events, and monthly donations. Any size
donations help the organization, which is why Angelia Reff, Nicolas Reff, and
Sandra Anic decided to have a lemonade stand to raise as much money as they
possibly could.
“We
saw that the Humane Society was celebrating its sixty years, so we thought it
would be a good idea to try and raise some money somehow for the organization.
Lemonade stands are very simple and easy to do, so over Thanksgiving break we
set one up in my neighborhood” says Angelia Reff. They made fun and colorful
signs for the stand and sold the lemonade for 50 cents. After that, the
lemonade was made and then they got ready to set up.
“The
only part I didn’t like was setting up the table and chairs. By that time it
started to rain a little and everything was very slippery” says Nicolas Reff.
Although it started to rain, the kids still ran the stand for about three
hours. After a long day in the cold and rain, they brought everything back
inside to count up the money they made.
Thirty
dollars was raised for the Humane’s Society. Even though it doesn’t seem like a
lot, any donation can help for the organization against animal cruelty. “I
wasn’t looking forward to sitting in the rain, but it was a great turn out and
I’m very happy with the money we raised for such a great organization”- Sandra
Anic.
Angelia Reff, a volunteer at the stand, makes fun and colorful signs to catch peoples attention when they drive past.
By mixing sugar, water, and lemons, Sandra Anic makes the lemonade to be sold at the stand.
At a local neighborhood, the kids begin to set up the stand a little while before they start to sell the lemonade.
Right before the stand is open for business, the signs are hung up. By this time the rain started coming down.
To help donate to the cause, Gregg Lucas buys lemonade from the stand.
Thirty five dollars was counted after three hours of sitting in the rain selling lemonade. The money was then later mailed to the Humane Society.

The American Teenager Project
This project is to photograph teenagers and show the struggles of adolescence. This type of photojournalism is a little bit more different than what you would usually see because there is one photo shown to describe something. The pictures of the teenagers completely describe their personality and just by looking at the photos you can kind of guess what their "story" is. I think this is a really cool project and I like how the photos tell a story of a teenager.
A few examples of the project:
Patrick Roberts: A teen mentioned that would be willing to participate in Kansas says that one of the better things about still being a teenager is that you are still able to have a romantic perspective on things.
Jason Kramer: This is one of my favorite projects because during this teens interview, he met his son for the first time and the interviewer states how the see a child holding a child. This teen was doing really good in life but he got into drugs and started making a lot of bad choices.
Courtney Paslick: A teen who "doesn't meet society's idea of what perfection looks like", but is actually quite beautiful. Although Courtney isn't exactly like everyone else, she still does the same things as the rest of her friends.

Humane Society Lemonade Stand Shots
Even though this event was not very significant, I really liked taking shots of the stand and I got a good idea of what photojournalism is. I had a hard time with getting the right lighting for my shots since it was a dark and rainy day, however by just using a flash I think they turned out alright. I wish I would have taken more shots but I am happy with the ones I got. I think that by doing this project it will really help with future shots I take.

Interview: Duane Michals on 50 Years of Sequences and Staging Photos
http://www.americanphotomag.com/photo-gallery/2014/11/interview-duane-michals-storyteller-retrospective-carnegie-museum?page=11
This article was about an interview of a famous photographer Duane Michals and how he staged pictures in a sequence to a tell a short story. While is pictures were very simple and plain, you could interpret a lot from his work. He did not study photography and just shot Tri-X in the available light that he had. Not trying to advance with the rest of the world with the technology is what makes his work special and different from others. In the article you also learn about it troubles with his parents, military experiences, and how he became famous. His story is interesting because Duane went against the traditions of fine art. What I took from the article the can benefit my final project is that I should be creative with my ideas and be original because if the story is like everyone else's, no one would want to read it or look at my photos.
Photo Journalism Ideas
I am thinking about doing something involving my brothers hockey team at Shippensburg University. This would be a good topic for me to do my project on because i would have easy access to the game before and after. Also, I know a lot about hockey so writing things about the game would be easy for me as well.

This article is about the cumberland valley girls soccer team winning three District-3AAA girls soccer championships three years in a row. The girls most recent win took place at Elizabeth town beating the opposing team 3-0. The article then continues to describe the battle against Spring-ford and last year cv lost 2-1. Recently girls soccer played against Spring-ford again with a tie 0-0.
I really liked the photos that were taken because the photographer captures not only the players but also the opposing team, and fans. There was a lot of variety from action shots to the players celebrating their win at the end of the game. Also, the photographer had shots of many people and just a single person. Just by looking at the pictures made me excited and happy for the team because of their facial expressions while receiving their medals and holding a large trophy. The article was well explained and included not only the score of the event photographed but also scores from previous games and a was very factual.

Portraiture Shooting Assignment
I learned a lot of important things out of doing this assignment. At first I was not looking forward to doing a portraiture assignment because I thought I would not like working with people to take pictures. It turned out that I actually really enjoyed doing this assignment and I learned that my favorite thing to photograph is people. It was easier for me to work with a person rather than nature. I enjoyed working with the poses, outdoors lighting, backgrounds, and the different props/outfits. I will definitly be photographing people more often.

10 Examples
Jen Baltgalvis
I liked this picture because instead of photographing the face of the baby, they took a different approach at it. They captured the child's feet and I think this picture looks really good.
Teal Photography
This is a really cool portrait shot because the lighting really compliments the dress and the water. Also, it's cool because you don't see a picture like this everyday, so it makes it even more interesting to see a picture like this.
Elaine Gates
This is a cute engagement picture and I like it because the color of her shirt matches the yellow plants and the sun. It was a good time of day that this photo was shot.
Elaine Gates
I find this an interesting senior portrait because I like how it shows
his personality in the photo (he plays football).
Jen Baltgalvis
I love this picture because the colors are very soft and the baby was in a bed outside not in a room so it really grabbed my attention and is a different way of looking at things.
Carisak Photography
This is a really good senior portrait because the girls eyes really stand out and look very pretty. I also get a warm feeling with the use of lighting, white clothing, and bright green and yellow grass.
Carisak Photography
This senior portrait is good because it has a lot of personality. I could assume from this picture that the girl is musical and plays instruments.
Colleen Co
I like this senior portrait because she is in a perfect pose and the lighting looks really good against her face.
Colleen Co
This senior portrait has a lot of personality because i can tell from this photo that he plays basketball and it's good to tell the photo will have meaning to him. It's also cool because it's more of an action shot.
Teal Photography
This is a really good engagement picture and I like how they are centered in the street and there are tall buildings on both sides surrounding them. They really stand out against the bright lighting in between the buildings.

Elaine Gates Recap
I learned a lot of interesting things yesterday when Elaine Gates came to tell us about the portrait unit. Some things I learned is that lighting is that the most important thing while doing portraits. It is important that you chose the right time of day to shoot, usually and hour before sunset, so it compliments the picture. Also you should ask the person you are photographing what they like and dislike about themselves so you can capture only the good things. It is a key thing to not photoshop things you don't have to and if you know you are making a mistake while shooting, fix it then. You should try and choose places that are meaningful to the person so the picture will mean something to them and that it won't just be a "pretty picture".

Final HDR Shots
iso 200 f22, 1/8, 1/40, 1/160
Framing: I took this picture of my best friend Angelia because she is meaningful to me. She used her hands to frame her face. This was the only portrait shot I took and I think that it's my favorite picture because it turned out very good and I wish that I did more HDRs using people.
iso 200 f22, 1/13, 1/50, 1/200
Asymmetrical Balance: I took this photo because one of my moms favorite things to do is to garden and she was very excited that she was able to grow a watermelon this year. This photo shows good asymmetrical balance because there is a lot of objects on the right side then on the left side it's just my driveway and some grass.
iso 400 f22, 1.3, .3, 1/13
Symmetrical Balance: I took this picture because one of my favorite places in my house is my dinning rooms because the windows are very pretty and a lot of light when the sun sets is always coming in through them. This photo shows good symmetrical balance because everything is very even on both sides including the candles on the window seal and the chair is also centered.
iso 200 f22, 1/40, 1/10, .4
Leading Lines: I took this photo because I have been playing soccer since when I was 4 or 5 and I spend a lot of my time playing. It is a little hard to tell, but I chose this picture for leading lines because in the concrete there is a crack that leads up to the soccer ball.
iso 400 f22, 1/10, .4, 1.6
Perspective: I really like this picture because my dog is my favorite thing in the world. I chose this picture as a different perspective because the picture is not straight and I am showing him from the side of the window coming out of the curtains. I thought it would make a good picture because my dog is really wild and the only time he is completely still is when he waits by the window for mom and dad to come home.
iso 200 f22, .14, 1/13, 1/50
Texture: I enjoy this picture because I really like the bright colors and how vivid the sky and grass look. Also, I like how the tree is only in one thirds of the photo. But, this is meaningful to me because I walk down this hill everyday after school when I get off my bus to get to my house. It was hard to involve this picture into this project but I wanted to since I think it turned out nice, so I used it for texture because I think there is cool texture in the trees bark.

Practice Shots of CV
I took this photo in the art courtyard because its my favorite place in the school because of how pretty it is with many different art pieces, plants, ect. also, this photo has symmetrical balance and good leading lines to the fountain.
This is my favorite picture I took at the school because I like the leading lines that the fence make and the picture looks very unrealistic.
I took this photo since I walk down this hallway everyday on my way to photography. But also I liked how the HDR effect made the hallway look really dirty and dark.

Sketchbook Cover/ Identity Project
I chose the quote "live life to the fullest" because I really believe that it's important to be happy and not waist any time because life is short. I really like spending time with nature because I think it is important to not be too connected to technology or that it's good to get away from it for a while every now and then. That is the reason all my photos on my sketchbook cover are taken of nature and that is also what I really like to photograph. I like how my sketchbook/ photos turned out because I edited some of them changing them different colors and making them look unrealistic. I also liked how on the back of my sketchbook the photographs of the eagle turned out and also the cut out flower.

HDR Examples
I chose this HDR because I love the beach and I like how the blue in the sky and green in the grass really stands out.
This is my favorite out of the examples I chose because the flowers look like they were painted because of how the shadows stand out. Also, the colors are very vivid and bright.
I like this HDR because the stream looks like the sky because of how much the reflection stands out in the water.
This HDR stands out to me because of the bright colors in the grass and sky. Also, it looks cool how the trees in the background are darker and the sky above it is bright.
I chose this photo because of how the sunsets color is reflected on the rocks. They look the same color as the sky.
I like this HDR because of how fake it looks. The water seems to be painted because if how smooth/ clear it is. Also I like the vivid colors in the photo.

Maddie Lucas
This is my favorite photo because it was a great accomplishment photographing an eagle since it is so rare to see them in the wild.
